Cogen Boiler Project, start up through completion: piping.
Statistics: Westvaco Corp. has announced a joint venture with SCANA Corp. to build and operate a power cogeneration facility at Westvaco's Kraft paper mill in North Charleston, S.C. The cogeneration plant, which is scheduled to be operational in the fall of 1998, will provide steam power to the paper mill and generate up to 99 MW of electricity for South Carolina Electric & Gas Co., a SCANA subsidiary. In addition, Westvaco entered into a 20-year contract with SCE&G to receive an additional 65 MW of electricity for its operations. The $160-million facility will be fueled with coal, bark, and other woodwaste from the paper mill, which operates three paper machines with annual capacities of about 830,000 tons of unbleached Kraft linerboard, folding boxboard, and saturating Kraft paper.  Black & Veach was awarded a contract to oversee the project, in which they contracted Sullivan & Associates at the beginning of the plant construction predominately for radiographic inspection services on power piping systems throughout the two boilers completion.

Robert Bosch Corporation

Project Duration: 2001
Major NDT Services Provided: X-ray
EV 6 Injectors for the Chrysler Daimler Corporation
Statistics: The EV6 injector is ‘over molded’ to form a one-piece injector with no internal seals or seams to leak. With fewer parts it is naturally lighter, more compact and easier to install. The injector provides a greater fuel dynamic flow range and refined spray pattern for improved fuel atomization and mixture combustion. An improved seat design yields a more positive seal, and less current draw reduces the possibility of ECU failure. Further, its increased dynamic range provides smoother performance and better fuel metering throughout a broad RPM range.  Plus its outstanding hot-fuel behavior reduces the formation of bubbles in hot fuel for improved drivability. Bosch’s new EV6 injectors are designed for installation in domestic and imported vehicles currently equipped with them, or interchanged with older-technology OE injectors in selected older vehicles. With their superior fuel flow and spray pattern, the EV6 should improve vehicle fuel and operating efficiency when replacing older-type injectors.

The Bosch Corporation contracted Sullivan & Associates to provide x-ray inspection services to detect internal imperfections on wire strands for the magnetic coil apparatus for over 30 thousand injectors during a 5 day period.

Project Duration: 2004
Major NDT Services Provided: Fluorescent Liquid Penetrant & Magnetic Particle
PUREX & Hanford Projects
Statistics: The PUREX & Hanford Project process for the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel to separate uranium and plutonium from the fission products and from one another. Following the dissolution of the irradiated fuel in aqueous nitric acid, uranium and plutonium are transferred to an organic phase by intensive mixing with an organic solvent extraction - 30 percent tributyl phosphate (TBP) in kerosene is used as organic solvent - while the fission products remain in the aqueous nitric phase. Further process steps enable the subsequent separation of uranium and plutonium from one another. The Still-Walter Company was contracted to fabricate nozzles and couplings used for the piping connections of the transfer piping process.  Still-Walter contracted Sullivan & Associates to develop NDT inspection procedures and provide liquid penetrant and magnetic particle inspection services.
